Who's My Saviour: Glasgow smile
29/01/08 || Euthanatos
These fine young German gents divulge themselves as grindcore. Even though there’s a lot of grind and crust in their music, they are also melodic and make sense of a troubled world. Okay, I made that last one up.
I only picked up this cd because the name seemed incredibly catchy, “Glasgow Smile”. I had never heard of Who’s My Saviour before. Another good thing about Who’s My Saviour, other than them having some sense of rhythm and melody, they also feature a pleasant variety to their songs, a trait very uncommon to grindcore bands. Thus, it would be appropriate to say these guys are quite unique. Everything from thrash metal to punkish crust can be heard here, and it’s all quite a delight to the year. Ravishing, we could say, yes?
The hip production, sounding dirty, yet contemporary, is also quite kitsch. Proposed to alienate the masses, no doubt. And let’s not forget the wonderful homage to our godfathers, Slayer, with the charming “When Magic turns into Black Plague”. It is, I might add, the strongest track in “Glasgow Smile”. Fascinating stuff, I must say. That and “Moaning song”, which is quite appealing.
The cover: I say, adorable, a drawn face of a young sir in his prime, with mechanic attachments. How avant-garde.
7 smiling Scots out of 10.
Disclaimer: Now read this review with a British accent. It will make a lot more sense. Thank you very much, spit spot, baby’s arm holding an apple, pip pip, cheerio.
